Aaron Copland - Clarinet Concerto
George Gershwin - Porgy and Bess Fantasy

Faure’s incidental music to Maeterlinck’s classic play Pelleas et Mellisande is one of his most popular works, written at breakneck speed for the stage production in 1893.  The play hit a nerve and inspired some amazing music by Debussy, Schoenberg & Sibelius.

The wonderful symphonic suite from Gershwin’s epoch defining Porgy and Bess is just that, a continuous orchestral suite of the show’s biggest hits, arranged for orchestra and made popular by the hugely talented Ian Farrington.  Gerswhin’s own suite, Catfish Row, missed out all the best numbers, so this is a little correction on behalf of history!

RNCM Engagements with professional orchestras

In addition to conducting student instrumental and vocal performances, the most valuable gift you can receive is the opportunity to lead exceptionally experienced players within professional orchestras. This is why our partnerships with the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé , Manchester Camerata, Psappha and Foden’s Brass Band are an integral part of our offer.

Postgraduates and Junior Fellows work as assistant conductors with these orchestras throughout the year, and masters students currently take their final examinations in concert with the BBC Philharmonic.

(in the presence of the composer)

The Royal Northern College of Music and Wigmore Hall present a day of music to celebrate the work of composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, one of the best known and most prolific British composers.

Turnage has a distinctive musical personality, with aggressive and energetic qualities contrasted with lyricism and tenderness, projected across his large catalogue of orchestral, chamber, choral and vocal works, as well as two large-scale operas. He is known for combining jazz, popular and classical elements in his music, often appealing to young audiences.

This study day features chamber music and orchestral works performed by students from the RNCM.

As the RNCM continues to research interesting programming ideas for our French Connections season, we thought why not curate our own original evening of 1920s Surrealist short films complete with brand new live scores composed and performed by our students?

Our programme will include Luis Buuels Un chien andalou (co-written by Salvador Dal), Man Rays Emak-Bakia, Ren Clairs Entracte and Hans Richters Vormittagsspuk (Ghosts Before Breakfast). Some of the shorts featured may not be that well-known but were extremely innovative for the time they were made and will be a very interesting watch.
