Stefan Asbury and Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Conducting Fellows lead the TMC Orchestra in this eclectic program. Lost for decades and rediscovered in 2009, Florence Price’s folk-music-tinged 1932 suite Ethiopia’s Shadow in America portrays an enslaved man’s spiritual journey from the time of his arrival on this continent. In Béla Bartók’s brilliantly lurid ballet score The Miraculous Mandarin is an astonishing feat of musical storytelling and imaginative orchestration. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s absorbing and emotionally wide-ranging Symphony No. 2 harks back to the late 19th century but is also characterized by Rachmaninoff’s unique gifts for expansive melody and careful musical architecture.

TBC - Compositions by the TMC COMPOSERS

BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons and Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Conducting Fellows lead the TMC Orchestra in music showcasing instrumental color and virtuosity. Abandoned in its two-movement form by Franz Schubert in 1822, the B minor symphony stands out for innovations in form, melody, and orchestration. The two Richard Strauss works on the program are poles apart in intention: the early Death and Transfiguration is a profound imagining of a man’s thoughts and revelations at the end of his life, while the “Dance of the Seven Veils” from the opera Salome is the alluring means by which, at her mother Herodias’s bidding, Salome seduces her stepfather Herod. Maurice Ravel’s charming orchestral suite Le Tombeau de Couperin was in part inspired by the French Baroque composer François Couperin.

Longtime Buffalo Philharmonic music director JoAnn Falletta (in her Tanglewood debut), BSO Artistic Partner Thomas Adès, and Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Fellows lead the TMC Orchestra in a range of modernist orchestral showpieces. Claude Debussy composed his two-movement tone poem Printemps originally in his early 20s; after the orchestral version was lost, he worked with his collaborator Henri Büsser 25 years later to restore and enhance its radical instrumental colors. Igor Stravinsky’s ballet score Agon is a thrilling yet austere late work for small orchestra that sounds both ancient and unequivocally modern, akin to his much earlier Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Dating from 1981, the late St. Louis-born composer Olly Wilson’s Lumina is a scintillating single-movement orchestral landscape. Paul Hindemith’s kaleidoscopic Symphonic Metamorphosis, virtually a catalog of orchestral and compositional possibility, was the composer’s purist foray into neoclassicism.

Conducting Fellows lead the extraordinary Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (TMCO), sharing the podium with internationally renowned conductors, who serve as teachers and mentors. Fellows participate in masterclasses with BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons and work daily with the Head of the Conducting Program, Stefan Asbury.

Two Fellows are chosen each year to conduct both orchestra and smaller ensembles. Fellows interact with BSO guest conductors, soloists, and musicians in a variety of formats, including rehearsal observation, masterclasses, score study sessions, and informal discussions. Conducting Fellows work closely with other TMC faculty on special projects, including classes on concerto accompanying with such artists as Emanuel Ax and Garrick Ohlsson, and in concerts that involve Vocal Arts Program Fellows and Faculty, under the leadership of Dawn Upshaw. Conducting Fellows have significant involvement in the Festival of Contemporary Music, often giving the world premieres of TMC-commissioned works.

As part of the Boston Symphony's new alliance with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, 2022 applicants accepted to the TMC Conducting Program will be considered to participate in a residency of up to eight weeks in Leipzig, during which they will work closely with Andris Nelsons, conduct a program with the Mendelssohn-Orchesterakademie of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and work with other major musical organizations such as St. Thomas' Church and Opera Leipzig.

We are pleased to present a new chapter of our Women Conductors programme. Having so far helped over 500 women nationwide to further their conducting skills at different levels, this new phase is specifically for female conductors based in the UK and Ireland committed to making this their primary vocation, with some experience of conducting professional or high-level student/non-professional orchestras.

We are presenting this opportunity in partnership with Sage Gateshead. Over a period of two years, it will involve several encounters with the full orchestral forces of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, with residual support from the RPS and RNS, and dedicated mentoring from Alice Farnham, Founder and Artistic Director of the Women Conductors programme.

It is principally a chance for participants to spend quality rehearsal time with one of the UK’s foremost professional orchestras. At its heart, everyone involved will also spend time reflecting together on the age-old relationship between a conductor and an orchestra, considering fresh approaches to bring out the best in one another.

In Autumn 2021 we opened applications and, from those, formed a cohort of seven exceptional conductors chosen to take part. Over several two-day courses between January 2022 and June 2023, they will spend dedicated time conducting the orchestra with coaching from Alice and guest experts, delve into multiple aspects of orchestral conducting, embracing a range of repertoire and formats. Between these sessions in Gateshead, the cohort will have contact time with Alice and with select RNS players, and residual career support from RPS and RNS staff.

The cohort has been chosen as they are all at very promising stages in their careers as conductors. As the courses progress, they will account their progress here on our website and social media, and we are giving each a dedicated RPS website page to showcase their achievements to date and tell you more about themselves.

Our WoCo Gateshead 2022-23 conductors are:

Please do click each of their names to read more about them.

We hope that orchestra managers, promoters and artist managers nationwide will follow their progress, and join us in helping them attain further opportunities and establish fulfilling careers. We are so pleased to tell you more about them, and further talents besides: there are indeed many more dearly dedicated and promising women conductors whom we couldn't offer places on this course who have met in our other courses over the last few years. Do contact us and we can tell you more.

WoCo Gateshead 2022-23 is kindly supported by the North Music Trust. We are also grateful to ABRSM and a number of individuals for their ongoing support of the RPS Women Conductors programme.
